How I’m Learning to Play the French Horn using AI (And You Can Too!)

Hi! I’m Clara. I’m 11 years old and I just started playing the French horn in my school’s band. I have a HUGE goal: I want to play the theme song from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast while my friend plays it on piano. Everyone says the French horn is a really hard instrument… but guess what? I’m doing it anyway. Here’s my plan, what I use to practice, and how you can learn it too if you’re a beginner like me!

Step 1: Start With the Basics

At first, I didn’t even play the horn. I practiced making “raspberries” with my lips (buzzing). It sounds silly, but it’s how you make sound on brass instruments. Then I learned to buzz into the mouthpiece, and eventually I made my first real horn noise.

Stuff that helped me in the beginning:

💡 AI Tip: I even used ChatGPT to explain why buzzing matters and to make it less boring by turning it into a game. For example, I asked it:
👉 “Can you make a silly 5-minute buzzing game for a beginner French horn player?”

Step 2: Play Easy Songs First

Before I even touched “Beauty and the Beast,” I learned super simple songs like:

  • Hot Cross Buns (only 3 notes)
  • Mary Had a Little Lamb
  • Ode to Joy

These songs sound easy, but they help you control your breathing and get used to moving your fingers on the valves.

💡 AI Tip: ChatGPT can take simple songs and make a practice plan for you. Example prompt:
👉 “Write a one-week practice routine for an 11-year-old beginner French horn player to learn Hot Cross Buns.”

Step 3: Learn More Notes

The French horn has a LOT of notes, and they can sound the same if you’re not careful. My teacher says you need to practice “long tones” (holding notes steady) and “scales” (playing notes in order). This makes your tone prettier.

Things that help me practice:

💡 AI Tip: I asked ChatGPT to quiz me on fingerings!
👉 “Give me flashcards to quiz me on French horn fingerings for the notes middle C, D, E, F, G.”

It showed me the note name and I had to answer the fingering before flipping to the answer. Like a practice buddy!

Step 4: Beauty and the Beast (Simplified!)

Now the fun part! I will start with a simplified version of the theme song, just the main melody in easy notes (C to A). Once I can play that, I will begin practicing longer phrases and higher notes.

Here’s how I will practice each week:

  • Week 1: Play the first 2 measures slowly.
  • Week 2: Add the next 2 measures.
  • Week 3: Try the whole first section without stopping.
  • Week 4: Play along with my friend on piano (even if I mess up, it’s fun!).

💡 AI Tip: ChatGPT even helped me break the song into “bite-sized” sections and suggested breathing spots.
👉 “Break the Beauty and the Beast theme song into 4 practice chunks for French horn beginner, with suggested breathing marks.”

My Big Goal

One day, I’ll play the real French horn version of Beauty and the Beast. But even the simple one sounds magical with the piano. My tip for other kids: don’t give up just because it squeaks or sounds funny at first. Every note gets a little better!

Final Thoughts

Learning French horn is hard but super fun. I’m only 11, and if I can do it, you can too. Start small, practice every day, and soon you’ll be playing songs that make people smile.

And don’t forget—you can use AI like ChatGPT as your practice coach, music buddy, and cheerleader. It won’t play the horn for you, but it makes practicing way more fun.
